Ray Bradbury a scris romanul în 1953, inspirat de arderea cărților în Germania Nazistă și de represiunea ideologică în Uniunea Sovietică. El a combinat elemente din povestirile sale anterioare, "Bright Phoenix" și "The Pedestrian", pentru a crea Fahrenheit 451.
