În Egiptul antic, boxul a fost adoptat de la populația locală din Nubia și a devenit popular. De acolo, sportul s-a răspândit în alte regiuni, inclusiv Grecia, Mesopotamia și Roma. Există dovezi vizuale ale boxului din Mesopotamia și Egipt, datând din mileniul al III-lea î.Hr.
