L. L. Zamenhof, un medic oftalmolog evreu din Białystok, a creat Esperanto în anii 1870 și 1880, după ce a observat diviziunile lingvistice și etnice din orașul său natal. El a publicat prima carte de gramatică a limbii sub pseudonimul Doktoro Esperanto. Limba a fost adoptată rapid de o comunitate de vorbitori, care au început să o utilizeze pentru comunicarea internațională.
